Cambridge had 13,096 residents in 2020. Settled in 1684 and incorporated in 1793, it grew on the canning of oysters, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey puts the median year a Cambridge home was built at 1970, and the city's 2026 Comprehensive Plan records residents asking Cambridge to "plan for flooding."

## A port city's historic district, Pine Street rows and newer subdivisions

The Cambridge Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1990, runs from the Choptank River south to Glasgow Street and west to Glenburn Avenue, with buildings from the late 18th to the mid 20th century. The city's design guidelines name styles from Federal and Greek Revival to Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Bungalow, and they say garages and sheds, including watermen sheds, are the most common outbuildings, usually reached by a driveway running straight from the street.

The Pine Street Neighborhood Historic District, one of the oldest continuously occupied African-American neighborhoods in the country, is mostly rows of two-story, gable-front frame houses built as factory worker housing. Past those districts come mid-20th century subdivisions and newer developments such as Cattail Crossing and Deep Harbour. Per the same Census survey, 21.4 percent of Cambridge's housing predates 1940, and 58.9 percent of occupied homes are rented.

## Choptank tides, southerly wind and a city one-third in the floodplain

About 35 percent of Cambridge, roughly 2,300 acres, lies in FEMA's 100-year floodplain, and the 2026 Comprehensive Plan notes the city rarely rises more than 20 feet above sea level, over a high water table and poorly draining soils. Rain, strong southerly winds and high tides often combine to flood low areas, and the plan cites recurring tidal flooding on Oakley Street. In January 2024 the city warned of probable flooding on Water Street, Hambrooks and Cedar Street. Hurricane Isabel drove a 5-foot storm surge into Cambridge in 2003, and NOAA counted seven days of high-tide flooding there in 2018. Along those low streets, water that reaches a garage hits the bottom seal, the bottom brackets and the cable ends first.

## Services

- [New garage door installation](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-installation): In the historic district, replacing doors and other building components needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission, even out of sight of the street or water, so we help choose a Haas style, finish and glass that suits the house.
- [Garage door cable repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-cable-repair): After tide or rain water gets into a Cambridge garage, look at the lift cables where they hook to the bottom brackets; DASMA warns that frayed or worn cables can break and should be replaced only by a trained technician, which is work we do.
- [Garage door seal replacement](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-seal-replacement): Rain pushed by the strong southerly winds the city plan describes finds any gap under a garage door, and a new bottom seal and side weatherstripping close it.

## Questions

### Who issues garage door permits in Cambridge?

The city does, through its Building Safety Services Division at 1025 Washington Street, which handles construction permits and inspections inside city limits. Dorchester County's Planning and Zoning office covers addresses outside the city, in places such as Algonquin. For a house in the Cambridge Historic District, also call the city's Planning Office, which explains the Historic Preservation Commission's application and deadlines.

### Will Cambridge's Historic Preservation Commission review a new garage door?

Yes, if the house is in the historic district. The commission issues Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior alterations there, including replaced doors, windows and roofs, even where the work cannot be seen from the street or water, and it judges them against the city's adopted design guidelines. It does not review paint color.
