Blue Hen Garage Doors repairs and installs garage doors in Centreville, the Queen Anne's County seat at the head of the Corsica River. We fix torsion and extension springs, lift cables, openers, photo eyes and doors that have come off track, and we install Haas steel and aluminum doors, with free next-day estimates on new ones.

A 1782 act of the Maryland Assembly ordered the county seat moved from Queenstown to a more central spot, which gave the town its French-style name, Centre Ville. The courthouse begun in 1792 is the only one in Maryland in continuous use since it was built, and the first commissioners laid out 37 lots along Commerce and Liberty streets, which now carry MD-213. With 4,727 residents in 2020, Centreville is the county's largest town.

## Centreville homes: an 18th-century core and a 2000s ring

The old town is a National Register district built between 1746 and 1950, with 327 contributing resources. The Maryland Historical Trust counts more than two dozen houses from 1794 to 1820 and more gambrel roofs than in any other known Eastern Shore town, and Chesterfield Avenue is lined with mostly frame Victorian, Colonial Revival and bungalow houses built after 1880. Centreville Heights, on Chestnut, Elm, Holly, Oak and Walnut streets, dates mostly from the 1940s to the 1960s, by state assessment records.

Then the town doubled. Its population changed by only 107 people from 1960 to 2000, then grew by 2,315 in ten years, and housing units went from 866 in 2000 to 1,989 in 2020. North Brook, on the north side, has about 420 houses built from 2000 to 2022; Symphony Village, a 55-and-over community to the south, about 390 from 2004 to 2016; and Providence Farm, to the east, about 90 and still filling in. So a Centreville job can mean a new door for an old garage near the courthouse, or new springs for a North Brook door that has been cycling since the 2000s.

## Corsica tides and the streams through town

Centreville's flood risk sits at its edges. The town is on a ridge framed by branches of the Corsica River, a tidal tributary of the Chester, and the county's 2025 hazard plan says Gravel Run and Mill Stream Branch expose it to riverine, flash and coastal flooding. Hurricane Hazel's 1954 storm tide was reported as the highest in Centreville's history, and Hurricane Donna's rain in 1960 closed MD-213 where it crosses Mill Stream Branch. For that plan, the town reported that high-tide flooding now comes more often at the wharf. On a low lot near the river, the water reaches a garage door's bottom seal, lower panel and bottom brackets first.

## Services

- [Garage door spring repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-spring-repair): Most North Brook and Symphony Village houses date from 2000 to 2016, so many of their doors have years of daily trips on the torsion springs. We put on new springs matched to the door and look over the lift cables, drums and bearings before we leave.
- [Garage door opener repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-opener-repair): In North Brook, Providence Farm and Symphony Village, we repair openers from worn gears and drive belts to misaligned photo eyes, dead remotes and keypads, then check that the door reverses on contact.
- [New garage door installation](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-installation): Near the courthouse, where Federal and gambrel-roofed houses set the look, we help pick a Haas carriage-style or raised-panel door, with windows and hardware to suit. For new houses, the town's design standards ask that garage doors not dominate the street front.
- [Commercial garage doors](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/commercial-garage-doors): The Centreville Business Park off MD-213 combines a shopping center with offices and light industrial buildings. We repair and install commercial overhead doors there and elsewhere in town.

## Questions

### Do I need a permit for garage work in Centreville?

Inside town limits, often yes. Town Code 170-53 bars erecting, moving, adding to or structurally altering a building without a permit from the Zoning Administrator, so a new garage or a widened door opening needs one. The town's application asks each contractor, including any electrician, to pull a separate permit. For a straight door swap, ask Town Hall; addresses outside the limits go to Queen Anne's County Planning & Zoning.

### Does Centreville regulate how a garage door looks?

For new houses and redevelopment, yes. The town's Development Design Standards, amended in 2025, aim to keep garage doors from dominating street-facing fronts. A front-loaded garage may sit up to 5 feet ahead of the house front only with a porch or similar feature, garages must take access from an improved alley where one exists, and doors should be of materials that suit the house. The Planning Commission applies the standards case by case.

### Is my Centreville garage in a flood zone?

Unlikely, but check the FEMA map for your address. The town plan says Centreville's floodplains follow the Corsica and its streams and are mostly woods and wetland. In floods, the most visible spot is Mill Stream Park, where Commerce and Liberty streets join on MD-213, and the floodplain also runs along Front Street from Wharf Lane to the wharf park. FEMA does not accept a garage door as a required flood opening, since someone would have to open it.
