Clayton's garage doors, from older houses along Main Street to Old Country Farm and Providence Crossing, are repaired and installed by Blue Hen Garage Doors, which comes up from our Dover office by way of DE-1 and Smyrna. In a town this new, original parts are what wear first: springs, lift cables, rollers and the opener that came with the house.

Clayton grew up around the railroad. It began in 1855 as Smyrna Station, became a junction when a second line arrived in 1874, and was incorporated in 1887. The recent growth is far bigger: the town went from 1,273 people in 2000 to 3,961 in 2020, and about three in four of its homes now date from 2000 or later.

- County: Kent County, Delaware
- ZIP codes: 19938
- Permits: Town of Clayton (https://www.clayton.delaware.gov/9/How-Do-I). Clayton issues its own building permits, and Kent County issues none in town; allow up to ten business days for plan review. Most final inspections are booked with First State Inspection Agency at (302) 422-3859.

## Clayton homes: a rail-town core and three big subdivisions

Most of Clayton's housing is new and detached. The town annexed the farms that became Huntington Mills in 2003, Providence Crossing in 2004 and Old Country Farm in 2005, and its 2008 plan describes several large single-family developments west of the railroad. About 88 percent of Clayton homes are detached and about 90 percent are owner-occupied, by Census estimates, so most garage doors here belong to the people who use them every day.

Townhouses are the other newer type: Liberty Knoll and Grain Mill Station were planned as townhome communities, and the Wheatley's Pond subdivision added one too. The older side of town is small but real. Roughly one in six Clayton homes predates 1940, and the plan notes a few two-family homes along Main Street on both sides of the tracks. On an older lot, we check the framing and the header before recommending a door.

## Clayton's ground, creeks and storms

Clayton is gently sloping, from about 15 feet above sea level on Providence Creek near the railroad to 55 feet in Old Country Farm, and three Smyrna River tributaries run through or along it: Providence Creek on the north, Greens Branch through Wheatley's Pond, and Mill Creek on the south. Wheatley's Pond doubles as stormwater management for the neighborhood beside it. Kent County's 2015 hazard plan lists a 52-knot gust in Clayton in August 2011 and hail close to an inch in June 2009 and June 2011, so check a door's panels and struts after a hard storm.

## Services

- [Garage door opener repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-opener-repair): With about half of Clayton's households raising children, per the 2020 census, a door that will not reverse is a real hazard. Opener work here starts with the reverse test and the photo eyes, then the motor, remotes and keypad, and a unit that cannot pass gets replaced.
- [Garage door spring repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-spring-repair): Old Country Farm, Providence Crossing and Huntington Mills were under construction when the town's 2008 plan was written, so many of their doors have close to two decades of daily use. When a spring snaps on one of those doors, we size the new spring to the door's actual weight instead of guessing from the old one.
- [New garage door installation](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-installation): For a townhouse in Wheatley's Pond, Liberty Knoll or Grain Mill Station, we match panel style and color to the row; for a single-family home in the newer subdivisions, we can quote insulated steel or aluminum Haas doors.

## Questions

### Does the town or an outside agency handle garage permits and inspections in Clayton?

The town does both, through its own office and a contracted inspection agency; Kent County does not issue permits inside Clayton. Applications go to the town at (302) 653-5637, and the town asks for up to ten business days for plan review. Final inspections for most projects, such as additions, decks and roofs, are booked with First State Inspection Agency at (302) 422-3859, while fences and sheds go through the town.

### How do I make a garage door safer in a Clayton house with young kids?

Test the safety reverse once a month, as the federal opener rules instruct: lay a 2 by 4 flat under the door and close it, and the door must reverse when it touches. Keep the wall button at least 5 feet up, out of small children's reach, and keep remotes put away. About half of Clayton's households have children, the 2020 census found.
