Blue Hen Garage Doors repairs and installs garage doors in Elkton, the Cecil County seat, where Big Elk Creek winds through town before joining Little Elk Creek to form the Elk River. We fix broken springs, frayed cables, openers and doors off track, and we install Haas steel and aluminum doors for houses, townhouses and businesses.

Swedish settlers who arrived in 1694 called the place Head of Elk, for the head of navigation on the Elk River, and it incorporated as Elkton in 1787. In the 1920s and 1930s it was the elopement capital of the East Coast. The town counted 15,807 residents in 2020, and Census estimates say about half of its homes are rented.

## Elkton homes: a wartime boom and a 1990s boom

World War II brought Elkton a housing rush when its fireworks plants switched to munitions. By March 1943, Triumph Industries employed nearly 12,000 people, more than three times the town's population of 3,518, and the federal government built nearly 100 two-family houses at Hollingsworth Manor for defense workers. Most homes in Elkton Heights and Friendship Heights date from the late 1930s to the 1950s, by state assessment records. In the historic district, the town's design guidelines note garages and carriage houses set at the rear of lots, especially where rear alleys serve them.

A second rush ran from 1990 to 2005, when the town's housing units rose from 3,597 to 5,487, mostly in the northeast quarter north of US-40: Grays Hill, Washington Woods, Chapel Run, the townhouses of the Meadows at Elk Creek and the Patriots Glen golf course community, with Kensington Courts in the southwest. Census estimates put the median home at 1988, and about one in four is an attached townhouse. So an Elkton job can be a carriage-house door behind a downtown house or new springs on a 1990s Washington Woods door.

## Big Elk Creek: rain from above, tide from below

Elkton's floods start with heavy rain upstream on Big Elk Creek, and high tides on the Elk River make them worse. The town's 2024 drainage assessment says tidal backwater reaches the lower Big Elk Creek and that floods regularly submerge Delaware Avenue, Howard Street and Bridge Street, leaving enough silt over the years to bury playground equipment in Meadow Park. In October 2010, merchants on South Bridge Street said the floodwater arrived with the high tide. The National Weather Service says Main Street starts to flood when the Big Elk Creek gauge at Elk Mills reaches 10 feet, and Main and Bridge streets go under at 13; Ida's remnants pushed it to 15.06 feet on September 2, 2021, second only to 1884. That silt ends up in garage door tracks and rollers, and the water soaks the bottom seal.

## Services

- [Garage door spring repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-spring-repair): Washington Woods, Kensington Courts, the Meadows at Elk Creek and Patriots Glen went up between 1990 and 2015, so most doors there have well over a decade of daily trips behind them. When one breaks, we replace it and check that the door balances and runs straight before we hand it back.
- [Commercial garage doors](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/commercial-garage-doors): Shops and service businesses along South Bridge Street and Howard Street sit where Big Elk Creek floods most often. After high water, we replace bottom seals and repair rollers, tracks and openers on their overhead doors.
- [New garage door installation](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-installation): In the Elkton Historic District, a door of a different material or design needs a Historic Area Work Permit before work starts. We help choose the Haas door, panel style, windows and hardware, and give you its specifications for the application.
- [Garage door opener repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-opener-repair): With about half of Elkton's homes rented, a change of tenants is the time to replace lost remotes, change keypad codes and confirm the door reverses. We repair openers, photo eyes, remotes and keypads.

## Questions

### Do I need approval to replace a garage door in Elkton's historic district?

Often, yes. Elkton requires a Historic Area Work Permit, whether or not a building permit is needed, to replace exterior doors with different materials or a different design. Exterior changes go before the Historic District Commission at a public hearing before any building permit is issued, and the town advises not ordering materials until approval comes. The 2017 design guidelines also put new garages toward the rear of the lot, out of view from the street.

### Is my Elkton address inside the town limits?

Not always. The town notes that some properties with an Elkton address sit outside its incorporated limits, and those go to Cecil County Permits & Inspections instead. Building & Zoning can confirm an address, or you can check the county's online map. Inside the limits, the town's permit application asks whether you belong to an HOA and wants its approval letter attached, and electrical work goes through one of two inspection agencies the town authorizes.

### Is my Elkton home in the Big Elk Creek floodplain?

It depends on the street. The town's 2022 Sustainable Community Plan says most of its floodplain land is parkland and open space, but the 2024 drainage assessment places downtown and the historic district in the floodplain and says stream bank erosion threatens homes in the northeast part of town. If a low garage there has flood vents in its door, keep them in the new one: FEMA warns replacements can drop them by mistake.
