Blue Hen Garage Doors repairs and installs garage doors in Frederica, from the historic district's houses of the 1700s and 1800s to Water's Edge on Frederica Road and the newest streets in town. Broken springs, frayed cables, openers, worn seals and full replacements in steel or aluminum, Haas included, are all part of the work.

Frederica grew at a bend of the Murderkill River as Johnny Cake Landing and took the name Frederica Landing in 1796. It was a shipping and shipbuilding port whose trade slipped after the Delaware Railroad was built through Felton instead in 1857, and its wetlands and frogs earned the nickname Frogtown, still shown on the fire company's trucks.

- County: Kent County, Delaware
- ZIP codes: 19946
- Permits: Town of Frederica (https://frederica.delaware.gov/forms-reports/). Kent County lists Frederica among towns where no county building permit is needed, so applications go to Town Hall at 2 West David Street, (302) 335-5417, for Planning and Council sign-off. Inside the historic overlay, the Historic District Review Certificate of Approval comes first.

## Frederica homes: the river town, Water's Edge and the newest streets

Frederica's oldest layer is the river town. The Frederica Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1977, counts 118 contributing buildings, the oldest from the mid-1700s, in Greek Revival, Italianate and Federal styles, and the town's 2015 plan put 127 of its 315 homes before 1939. The town's historic overlay covers frontages on both sides of its streets, so a garage door that changes a property's look there goes through review.

The newer layers came fast. The town reported in 2020 that the recently completed Water's Edge development on Frederica Road had pushed its population toward 900 to 1,000, and Kent County parcel records date about 170 of the town's roughly 460 residential parcels to 2010 or later, including houses on Waterway Drive, Hightide Drive and Tidewater Court built from 2011 to 2019. The newest streets, such as Antietam, Kearsarge and Saipan Drive, sit on a plat of about 300 lots whose first houses were finished in 2024 and 2025. Standard springs are commonly rated for about 10,000 cycles, and a door hung on Waterway Drive in 2011 that opens and closes four times a day has passed 20,000.

## Tidal roads, marsh edges and a 2026 tornado

Tide water on the Murderkill is what sets Frederica's conditions apart. The town's 2015 plan names Market Street north of Coleman Avenue and Frederica Road on both approaches to the Murderkill bridge as roads with periodic flooding not tied to storms, with Market Street at times impassable at high tide, and Kent County's hazard plan says Frederica was the hardest-hit inland town in the January 1998 nor'easter. FEMA's flood map keeps the historic center and most Waterway and Hightide Drive lots outside the 100-year floodplain, though parts of the marsh edge are mapped AE. Wind hit on March 16, 2026, when an EF-1 tornado snapped trees along Fork Landing Road south of town, and one fell into a shed and destroyed it.

## Services

- [New garage door installation](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-installation): Inside the historic overlay, a new door that changes the look of the property needs the town's Certificate of Approval first. We help settle panel style, color, windows and hardware for the application, then install the approved steel or aluminum Haas door.
- [Garage door spring repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-spring-repair): Doors on Waterway and Hightide Drive went up with houses built from 2011 to 2019, and some may still run on their original springs. When one snaps, we fit springs matched to the door's weight and check the cables, drums and balance.
- [Garage door seal replacement](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-seal-replacement): On low lots near Market Street and the Frederica Road approaches, where the town's plan records tidal road flooding, a tight bottom seal keeps water and debris out. We replace bottom seals, retainers and side weatherstripping.
- [Off-track garage door repair](https://www.bluehengaragedoors.com/garage-door-off-track-repair): After a storm like the March 2026 tornado on Fork Landing Road, a door hit by wind or debris can twist in its tracks. We set the tracks plumb, replace bent rollers and brackets, and test that the door closes square.

## Questions

### Does a garage door change in Frederica's historic district need approval?

If it changes the look, yes. Frederica's land development ordinance sends exterior changes in the historic overlay to the Planning Commission for a Historic District Review Certificate of Approval, and Town Council votes on the commission's recommendation. Applications are due 15 days before the commission's monthly meeting. Repairing an existing door in the same material is listed as ordinary maintenance that needs no Historic Review, after an informal preliminary check.

### Who issues a building permit for a garage in Frederica?

The town does. Kent County lists Frederica among the towns where no county building permit is required, so the application goes to Town Hall at 2 West David Street, (302) 335-5417. The town's form covers accessory buildings such as sheds, carports and garages, asks for a plot plan with property lines, setbacks and driveways, and has lines for Planning and Council approval. Permits run one year, with one six-month extension available.
