Greenwood garage doors are repaired and installed by Blue Hen Garage Doors, working from our Dover office. We take care of springs, cables, openers, sensors, seals and doors that have left their tracks, and we put up Haas doors in steel or aluminum for houses, businesses and farm buildings.

Greenwood grew up around the Delaware Railroad, which reached the area in 1858. Simeon Pennewell laid out Market Street, Minor Street and the cross streets on his land, and the station made Greenwood a market town while the older village of St. Johnstown faded. Greenwood Trust Company opened here in 1911 and later became Discover Bank. The town is still small, 990 people on 0.7 square miles, in a district first settled as prime farmland.

- County: Sussex County, Delaware
- ZIP codes: 19950
- Permits: Town of Greenwood, with Sussex County plan review and inspections (https://greenwood.delaware.gov/forms/). Town Hall at 100 West Market Street issues building permits under Ordinance A-2, checks whether the address is in a flood zone, and requires the builder to hold a Greenwood business license. Sussex County performs the plan review and inspections for the town.

## Railroad-era houses and working farm buildings

The 1868 atlas shows Greenwood organized around the railroad, with a depot, store, hotel and homes within a few blocks of the track, and the town still keeps that compact shape. A 1928 fire destroyed a number of commercial buildings, and the town then built a water system with an elevated tank for fire protection. If your house on Market, Church, Beaver or Broad Street (Broad was once Maple) has an old detached garage, check the size of its opening first, since an outbuilding that old may not take a stock-size door.

Out past the town limits, the doors get bigger. Greenwood's early economy ran on orchards and row crops, along with a forge, a gristmill, a sawmill and a cannery, and farm buildings around town still need openings wide and tall enough for equipment. For a pole barn or machine shed, we size and hang tall Haas steel doors and service the heavy springs and cables behind them.

## Record snow, frozen seals and field dust

Greenwood holds Delaware's official snow depth record: 28 inches, measured near town on February 7, 2010, after the blizzard of February 5 and 6. Snow that deep packs against the bottom of a door and can freeze the seal to the slab. If the door will not lift in a freeze, stop pressing the opener button; forcing it can strip the opener's gear or bend the top panel. Free the seal first, then try again. The rest of the year, dust from the farmland around town collects in the tracks and on the photo eyes.

## Questions

### My garage door is frozen to the floor. What should I do?

Stop pressing the opener button. Free the bottom seal gently with a plastic scraper and clear snow and ice out of the tracks, then try the opener once more. If the door still will not move, or a cable or spring looks wrong, leave it and call us. Greenwood holds Delaware's snow-depth record, 28 inches in 2010, so a healthy bottom seal is worth keeping up.

### Is Greenwood in Blue Hen's service area?
