## Wyoming homes, from the railroad grid to Wyoming Mills

Wyoming's own plan calls it a classic railroad-era town. Near the tracks, North and South Railroad Avenue run on either side of the line, the streets are gridded, and the historic district roughly bounded by Front Street, Caesar Rodney Avenue, Southern Boulevard and Mechanic Street holds Victorian-period buildings. An old garage or carriage shed on one of those lots may not take a stock door size, so expect us to measure the opening and the headroom before quoting.

Away from the core, the plan describes first-generation subdivisions with cul-de-sacs and winding roads north and east of the historic core, and suburban stub streets south of Southern Boulevard. About a fifth of the town's homes were built from 2010 to 2019 and about a fifth are attached, so plenty of the garage doors here are fairly new, and some belong to attached homes.

## Wyoming's creek, mill pond and wind history

Most of Wyoming sits on well-drained upland soils that are not prone to flooding, the town plan says, with two exceptions: the Isaac Branch, which carries the town's 100-year floodplain, and the east end of Wyoming Mill Pond, which is in the 500-year floodplain. The plan also notes DNREC's finding that a storm failure of the privately owned mill dam could put State Route 15 under water and put homes at risk. Wind has struck too: an EF0 tornado touched down in Wyoming on September 3, 2012, doing about $100,000 in damage, according to National Climatic Data Center records. For a low garage near the creek, a tight bottom seal and a well-braced door are the practical defenses.

### Is a new garage door in Wyoming's historic district reviewed for style?

Not by a town design board. Wyoming's historic district, set up in February 1987, is nationally recognized, but the town plan says its land use and development code does not include a historic district.
