Historic district houses and new subdivisions
Milton's garages come in two very different kinds. The historic district holds 198 contributing structures, and many homes on Union and Federal streets have been restored to their original form. The town's preservation guide says an old garage that is original to a contributing house, and counts as contributing itself, must be preserved the same way as the house, with any change approved by the Historic Preservation Commission. A new garage cannot attach to the historic house or sit in the front or side yard.
Away from the old core, the houses are much newer. Cannery Village went up in the 2000s on the site of a former cannery, and The Granary plans 65 percent single-family homes and 35 percent townhomes. For an aging builder door in those neighborhoods, we can rebalance or replace the springs, or quote an insulated Haas steel door in a carriage or raised-panel style.
