Clayton homes: a rail-town core and three big subdivisions
Most of Clayton's housing is new and detached. The town annexed the farms that became Huntington Mills in 2003, Providence Crossing in 2004 and Old Country Farm in 2005, and its 2008 plan describes several large single-family developments west of the railroad. About 88 percent of Clayton homes are detached and about 90 percent are owner-occupied, by Census estimates, so most garage doors here belong to the people who use them every day.
Townhouses are the other newer type: Liberty Knoll and Grain Mill Station were planned as townhome communities, and the Wheatley's Pond subdivision added one too. The older side of town is small but real. Roughly one in six Clayton homes predates 1940, and the plan notes a few two-family homes along Main Street on both sides of the tracks. On an older lot, we check the framing and the header before recommending a door.
