Townsend homes: new subdivisions around an 1885 railroad town
Most of Townsend is new. Census estimates put the median build year at 2006, and more than 80 percent of homes were built in 2000 or later, mainly in Townsend Village, Townsend Village II and Townsend Station, with Townsend Crossings, Townsend Cove and the Woods at Hidden Creek also inside the town line. The 2010 town plan notes that Townsend Village and Townsend Village II are zoned for detached single-family houses on lots of at least 10,000 square feet. A replacement door there usually fits a standard opening; the bigger question is what your HOA or maintenance corporation allows.
The old town is the Townsend Historic District, centered where Main Street crosses Wiggins Mill Road and listed on the National Register in 1986 with 216 buildings, from Victorian houses to bungalows. The plan itself describes aging downtown homes surrounded by newer subdivisions. An older garage or outbuilding in the historic blocks may need its opening measured and its framing checked before a new door goes in.
