Hockessin homes: farmsteads, then 1960s to 1990s subdivisions
Hockessin dates to 1688, and its farm past is on record: the A. Armstrong Farm, T. Pierson Farm, Springer Farm and the Cox/Phillips/Mitchell Agricultural Complex are on the National Register, and mushroom farms still operate in the area. Most homes came later. By Census estimates, more than four in five were built from the 1960s through the 1990s, about 84 percent are detached houses, and owners occupy about 90 percent.
Hockessin Hills, Hockessin Greene, Meeting House Hill, Westridge, Wellington Hills and Hockessin Valley Falls are a few of the many named communities here. On a detached house, the garage door is a big part of what you see from the street, so style, windows and color matter as much as the springs. A carriage-house design on a steel or aluminum Haas door can suit a farmhouse look, the way the white carriage doors we installed suit a cedar-shake detached garage.
