Harrington homes: an old railroad core and a new pipeline
Harrington's older housing follows the tracks. The 2025 plan describes a railroad-era town that initially favored one side of the tracks; west of the line, streets skew toward the central crossing at Clark Street and houses sit on modest lots without deep front yards, and the Harrington Historic District joined the National Register in 2019. When an old garage door on one of those lots finally gives out, a carriage-style steel or aluminum door is a practical match for the age of the house.
The new housing is going up on the city's outskirts, and a lot of it is still coming. The plan lists Harrington Meadows, open since 2020 with about 20 lots left for single-family and duplex homes; Harmel Village behind the Food Lion, approved for 161 units including 101 townhomes; Sunshine Estates, annexed in October 2024 for 277 single-family homes; and Ryan Farm, annexed in February 2024 for 484 homes, 284 of them single-family. That is a big jump for a city that added roughly 32 homes a year from 2020 to 2023.
